This small-scale circular panel is a high-quality version of a subject much loved by Simon Vouet during his years in Paris: The Virgin Mary with the Christ Child. In particular, the iconography of this picture, with a rose held in the Virgin’s left hand, must have met with great success. An original version on canvas of this subject is cited in the inventory of the paintings present in Vouet’s studio, drawn up in January 1639. Galleria Canesso, Lugano.
