Does Valentine's Day Come From Roman Lupercalia?

601

The three days of the Roman festival of the “Lupercalia” was celebrated February 13-15th. It was to bless and cleanse the city and help with fertility by removing evil spirits. People dressed in goat skins (which had been sacrificed and skinned) would whip women to help with fertility. Basically, Valentine’s Day (14th) may have come from this festival. The term Lupercalia comes from lupus (wolf) and perhaps the suckling of Romulus and Remus by the She Wolf is the origin of this Pagan Festival. Further, it may have actually been pre-Roman just to complicate things further.
