A Roman soldier, relieved that the Second Punic War is finally over, is enjoying a nice peaceful hike through the Alps. The air is crisp. The views are spectacular. Life is good.

Then he sees the elephant.

This meme is about Hannibal Barca’s legendary crossing of the Alps in 218 BC, when he led his Carthaginian army — including war elephants — over the mountains to attack Rome from the north. The Romans had never seen elephants before. They panicked. Entire legions broke formation at the sight of these massive, trumpeting monsters appearing out of the Alpine mist.

Hannibal’s Alpine crossing is one of the most audacious military maneuvers in history. He lost half his army and most of his elephants to the cold, the terrain, and hostile tribes. But the ones that survived? They caused absolute chaos. To the Romans, those elephants were basically dinosaurs from another world. “Is that a fucking elephant” is the most historically accurate reaction a Roman could have had. Hannibal ad portas indeed.
