Legend of Devils Tower

Gorgocutie Says:

A vintage illustration by Herbert A. Collins depicting a massive, shaggy green bear clawing its way up a sheer cliff face while tiny human figures watch from the top.

This is Devil’s Tower in Wyoming, depicted through the Native American (Lakota) legend: seven girls chased by a giant bear prayed to the Great Spirit, who raised the ground beneath them. The bear clawed at the sides — leaving the vertical grooves Devil’s Tower is famous for today.

The joke: the painting is titled “The Legend of Devil’s Tower” but what it actually shows is just the bear from the legend, rendered in absurdly literal detail as a giant furry monster scaling a national monument.

Artist: Herbert A. Collins, known for his tongue-in-cheek illustrated postcards of American landmarks.
