What’s the context?
This is a darkly satirical graphic that reimagines Christian iconography by modernizing the symbol on top of church steeples.
The cross was the Roman Empire’s method of execution — an instrument of torture and public humiliation. Over 2,000 years, it’s been sanitized into a universal symbol of faith. This meme imagines what churches would look like if Jesus was executed using 20th/21st century methods instead:
Top-left: Gallows (hanging) — The noose, one of history’s most common execution methods, still used in several countries today.
Top-right: Guillotine — The symbol of revolutionary France’s "democratic" execution, last used in 1977.
Bottom-left: Assault rifle (firing squad) — The M16/AR-15 platform, representing modern military and state-sanctioned executions by gunfire.
Bottom-right: Lethal injection syringe — The primary method of judicial execution in the United States today, often criticized for its medicalized facade.
The point isn’t that crosses aren’t brutal (crucifixion was designed to be as agonizing and degrading as possible). It’s that time and cultural familiarity have scrubbed the horror from the icon. The same way future generations might look at a church topped with a syringe and think "faith" rather than "state killing."
