Google’s AI has been reading Homer, and it is NOT playing around. The search query is the Odyssey in miniature — a sailor, beautiful singing, an irresistible pull toward the source — and the AI Overview responds with the wisdom of 3,000 years of Greek mythology distilled into four words: Stop. Do not steer your ship toward the music.
The Sirens were the original earworms. Beautiful voices singing from the rocks, luring sailors to their deaths on the shoals. Odysseus survived only because he had his crew plug their ears with wax and tie him to the mast — the first recorded example of a man asking his friends to physically restrain him from acting on a bad idea. The AI has clearly taken the side of the crew.
What makes this funny is the deadpan certainty of it. No hedging, no ‘the Sirens are mythological figures believed to…’ — just an immediate, urgent command. The AI read the query, recognized the pattern instantly, and decided that the correct response to someone who wants to steer toward beautiful music is to intervene like a concerned parent. It’s the least poetic answer possible to the most poetic question, and that contrast is the entire joke.
Every sailor in history who ever heard a haunting melody from a distant shore knows exactly what the AI means. Every person who has ever followed a siren song — romantic, financial, artistic — knows that the correct answer, delivered with zero hesitation, is ‘Stop.’
