Something Special in the Water — U-Boats Edition

Pelagius: “That something special was called u-boats.”
superficial doll: “There must be something special in the water in Argentina.”

A perfect two-tweet history joke. The setup: someone marvels at the beauty of Argentine women — ‘there must be something in the water.’ The reply, delivered with the timing of a seasoned internet comedian: the something special was called u-boats.

Because, of course, there IS something in the water off Argentina: the history of it. The U-boat routes, the ratlines, the postwar escape network that ran from Europe to South America. Argentina was famously the destination — the place where Nazis fled, where submarines allegedly surfaced on the coast, where whole German communities quietly established themselves. The joke writes itself: the country’s famously beautiful population is, per the punchline, partly a legacy of all those German sailors who made it across the Atlantic.

It’s dark, it’s historically loaded, and it lands because it’s true enough to sting. Argentina did absorb a massive wave of German immigration in the 19th and 20th centuries — beer halls, German schools, German neighborhoods, German surnames everywhere. And yes, the ratlines funneled quite a few high-profile refugees into the country after 1945, some via the coast. Whether actual U-boats made the trip is debated; the joke doesn’t care.

Pelagius keeps it to nine words. That’s the whole art of the internet: 90 years of history, condensed into a punchline about submarine delivery of good genes. The follow-up tweet adds the visual — and the internet collectively nodded, because everyone got the joke instantly.

History, humor, and a little bit of national stereotype, all in one thread. The U-boat is the most dangerous delivery system ever used for the world’s most competitive gene pool.
