Anime gave us flowing locks and dramatic winds. History gave us the chonmage and a very specific bald spot.

Sengoku-era samurai were not walking around with wild flowing mane blowing in the wind like an anime protagonist. The real deal was the chonmage — shaved crown, oiled side hair folded forward into a neat topknot. It served a practical purpose (keeps the helmet comfortable) but it does not make for a cool character poster.
The top row is a murderer’s row of anime cool: Kenshin, Hyakkimaru, Kojiro, Mugen. The bottom row is just four identical Wojaks with historically accurate dome showing. The accuracy hurts.
