Select all squares with the Ship of Theseus

Google’s reCAPTCHA meets one of philosophy’s oldest paradoxes. How do you verify you’re not a robot when you can’t even verify if a ship is still the same ship?

Ship of Theseus reCAPTCHA

The Ship of Theseus paradox asks: if you replace every plank of a ship over time, is it still the same ship? Now imagine being asked to identify it in a CAPTCHA. Every square could be the ship. Every square could be a new ship. There is no correct answer. The only winning move is to click SKIP and question the nature of identity itself.

Bonus: the painting is a classical Greek trireme, which makes it historically appropriate — Theseus was the mythical king of Athens, after all.
