Before Christopher Nolan there was Armand Assante, and before IMAX there was NBC’s Sunday night television budget. The 1997 “The Odyssey” miniseries was a legendary TV event that gave us one of the most unintentionally iconic adaptations of Homer’s epic.
Armand Assante as Odysseus? Chewing scenery from Troy to Ithaca. Isabella Rossellini as Athena? Divine. But let’s talk about the casting choice that broke the ancient Greek internet — Vanessa Williams as Calypso.
A Black American pop star playing a Greek nymph in the 90s? Oh, the outrage was real. People were furious. They said she was “too hot” for the role. They said it wasn’t historically accurate (as if a 2800-year-old epic about a one-eyed giant was). They wrote angry letters.
And Vanessa? She showed up, looked absolutely stunning, and delivered the most memorable Calypso to date. The controversy only made her more iconic.
Some say the gods themselves wept at the audacity. Others say it’s just a really good TV movie about a guy who takes way too long to get home. Either way, watch it. 🏛️🌊
