Here’s a piece of American trivia that sounds like a fever dream but is absolutely true. James Garfield — the 20th President of the United States, a man who served only 200 days before being assassinated by Charles Guiteau in 1881 — is the great-great-grandfather of Richard Garfield, the man who created Magic: The Gathering in 1993.

That’s right. The guy who invented the most iconic trading card game in history, the game that basically birthed an entire genre and is still going strong 30+ years later, is DIRECTLY descended from a US President. And not even one of the famous ones — Garfield is the "oh yeah, he was president for like five minutes" president.

James Garfield was a Union general, a Congressman, and the last president born in a log cabin. He was also reportedly ambidextrous and could write Latin with one hand while writing Greek with the other (classic overachiever). Richard Garfield was a math professor who designed MtG as a way to pass the time between Dungeons & Dragons sessions and accidentally created a multibillion-dollar empire.

So next time someone casts a Black Lotus, tell them they’re holding a piece of presidential history.
