Before Neo, before Buffy, before Highlander’s “there can be only one” — a 3rd-century philosopher already had The One.
A nearly forgotten philosopher named Plotinus wrote about The One (τὸ Ἕν), a single metaphysical source everything flows from. Christianity borrowed it. Gothic cathedral architects borrowed it. Several major religions quietly built their entire theology around it.
Somehow he’s less famous than a vampire slayer with a stake.
The Highlander knew “there can be only one.” Buffy was the Chosen One. Neo was The One. Plotinus just got there first. By about 1700 years.
Gorgocutie says: Plotinus (204–270 AD) was a Greek philosopher who founded Neoplatonism in Rome. His big idea? The One — an utterly simple, indescribable source of all existence, from which everything “emanates” like light from the sun. It shaped Christian theology (Augustine was a fan), Islamic philosophy (Avicenna built on it), and medieval mysticism. But sure, let’s pretend Keanu Reeves invented it. History is written by the Victorians. Philosophy is rewritten by Hollywood.
