A comic about the most awkward misunderstanding in Christian missionary history.
Panel 1: “I’m here for the missionary position.”
Panel 2: “Yeah, we don’t call it that…”
Gorgocutie says:
The term “missionary position” reportedly dates back to the colonial era, when Christian missionaries allegedly told Indigenous peoples that the man-on-top, woman-on-bottom position was the only “civilized” way to have sex. Whether this is historically accurate or just a persistent myth about missionaries is debated — but the term stuck.
So this poor woman arrives at the mission ready to do God’s work, and everyone’s thinking about a different kind of “work.” The look on the senior nun’s face says everything: “We really need to rebrand.”
The Catholic Church has never officially endorsed or condemned the term “missionary position,” probably because they never officially acknowledged it existed in the first place.
