Diomedes

557

The verses of Book V of the Iliad, entirely dedicated to the deeds of Diomedes, immediately characterize him as a great hero and warrior, protected by the goddess Athena. Character of Greek mythology, of royal lineage, with the companions participated in the second war against Thebes and won it. He returned the kingdom of Calidon to his grandfather.

He became king of Argos by marrying Aegialia, the king’s orphaned daughter. He participated with great glory in the war of Troy, on the Achaean side, distinguishing himself as a valiant warrior, winning over several Trojan warriors, including Xanthus, the archer Pandarus and the charioteer Calesius.

He took the field against Hector and Aeneas, and even against the gods, wounding Aphrodite who rushed to help her son Aeneas. The latter story is represented by Jean-August-Dominique Ingres in this oil on panel from around 1805, in the Kunstmuseum in Basel.
