The Byzantine Empire (330-1453 AD) was the medieval continuation of the Roman Empire in the East. By the time it fell, it had outlasted the Western Roman Empire by nearly a thousand years. The Byzantines were famous for their elaborate court ceremonies, intricate diplomacy, gorgeous mosaics, and — let’s be honest — enough court intrigue to fill a dozen seasons of prestige television.
So “Byzanteens” is the perfect portmanteau. Byzantine politics had all the drama of a high school hallway: backstabbing, cliques, shifting alliances, and the constant threat of being exiled (or blinded, which is a lot worse than getting sent to detention). Emperor Justinian and Theodora were basically the power couple that ran the school. The eunuchs were the hall monitors. The Varangian Guard were the cool foreign exchange students.
Some empires fall to barbarians. The Byzantines fell to teenagers acting like teenagers — just with more gold mosaics and less TikTok.
