The Invisibility Ring — A Goblin’s Worst Sale

596

Goblin shopkeeper: “This ring will turn its wearer invisible!”
Customer: “Really? Can I try it?”
Goblin: “See? Just as advertised! It’s yours for only 20,000 gold!”
Customer: …gone.

Four panels. No punchline dialogue needed. The customer puts on the ring, vanishes exactly as promised, and the goblin is left alone at the counter, talking to empty air, 20,000 gold poorer in spirit and zero gold richer in pocket.

The comic is a masterpiece of visual economy — the joke doesn’t need a final line because the silence IS the punchline. The goblin’s sales pitch was perfectly honest: the ring turns its wearer invisible. What he failed to consider is that an invisible customer is also a customer who can walk out without paying. The ring was real, the advertisement was truthful, and the merchant just demonstrated his own product for free to someone who then used it against him.

Every fantasy merchant’s nightmare in one panel: you sell a thief the perfect tool, and the first thing they test it on is your inventory. There’s a business school lesson in here — never let customers try the product that makes them impossible to collect payment from. The goblin should have required a deposit. He should have asked for the gold FIRST. Instead he now owns a magic ring that’s currently being worn by a very happy, very invisible elf who is probably halfway to the exit.

It’s also the perfect metaphor for a certain kind of naivety: the honest salesman who believes the world will pay for what it can take for free. In a world of magic rings, the first person to use one is going to be the one who just got told it works.

And somewhere, in a fantasy city market, there’s a goblin who now says ‘try it first, pay after’ to absolutely nobody, because no one ever comes back to his shop anymore. The ring has a new owner. The lesson has a permanent resident.
