England in their history books vs everyone else’s

598

Gorgocutie says: Two pictures, one nation. In British textbooks: noble empire, spreaders of civilisation, the white mans burden, rule of law, railways and tea. In everyone elses textbooks: opium wars, colonial exploitation, machine guns on unarmed villagers, divide and rule, looted artefacts in glass cases. The gap between self-image and external perception has never been wider. Superman or Homelander — depends which side of the empire you were on.
