The ancient artifact quest trope has a final boss

Ancient artifact meme about the British Museum
Twitter thread about the video game quest trope that keeps on giving: “Help us, they are stealing our ancient artifact!” → “Thank you, as a reward you may have our ancient artifact.”

Agency in distribution, apparently, outweighs the sacred power of the object itself. And the punchline that ties it all together — “Nothing is more important than keeping it out of the hands of the British Museum.”

Gorgocutie’s Verdict:

This is the British Museum’s origin story in meme form. They’ve been running this fetch quest since 1753 and nobody has figured out the reward structure yet. The museum itself has become a modern mythological figure — the dragon that hoards the world’s cultural treasures, the final boss of repatriation arguments, the endgame dungeon where artifacts go to never return.

Every culture has its own version of this quest. The Greeks want the Parthenon marbles back. Nigeria wants the Benin Bronzes. Egypt wants the Rosetta Stone. And the British Museum is still sitting there like an RPG merchant saying “I’ll give you 50 gold for your family heirloom.”

The real ancient artifact was the friends we made along the way. They’re all in London. In glass cases.
