Charles Meynier (French, 1763/1768–1832)Wisdom Defending Youth Against Love, 1810. Oil on canvas, 242 × 206 cm. National Gallery of Canada.

This is the oldest ‘Mom, stop, it’s just a phase’ painting in existence.

Meynier was a top-tier Neo-Classicist, pupil of François-André Vincent, Prix de Rome winner in 1789, and one of the great decorators of Napoleonic France. He painted ceilings, allegories, and the occasional giant mythological intervention — like this one, where Wisdom (the armored older figure) physically shields Youth (the vulnerable young nude) from Love/Cupid, who is hovering in with his arrow ready, clearly not taking rejection well.

It’s a Neoclassical intervention scene: the intellect standing between innocence and the worst decision of its life. Every parent who has ever met their teenager’s first ‘soulmate’ knows exactly how Wisdom feels here. The expression on Wisdom’s face says ‘not today, Cupid.’ The posture says ‘I have handled worse.’ The youth, for their part, is half-tempted, which is the entire point — Wisdom isn’t stopping a runaway; it’s stopping someone who is about to make a very bad choice while still kind of wanting to.

The National Gallery of Canada holds it, and it’s one of the best arguments in art for why allegory should make a comeback: where else do you get a story this precise? ‘Wisdom defending Youth against Love’ is literally a title you can build a college course around. And it’s been hanging in Ottawa since the 20th century, doing its eternal work of reminding young people that the beautiful stranger with the arrows is not, in fact, offering a good deal.

Fun fact: Meynier shared the Prix de Rome in 1789 with Anne-Louis Girodet — two giants of the genre, one scholarship year. That’s the art world’s equivalent of splitting a Nobel. And this painting is why: the man could compose a rescue scene like nobody else. Wisdom wins this round. Youth learns nothing, and will absolutely be needing Wisdom again next semester.
