Axis in WWII: the least functional alliance in history

Axis in WWII - Allies vs Axis meme
Top panel: the Allies gathered around a table, united. Bottom panel: the Axis powers in a chaotic dogpile brawl — backstabbing, betraying, and fighting each other while supposedly on the same side.

The meme frames the Axis as a fractured pantheon of rival war gods who are physically incapable of true alliance. Nazi war crimes against allies, Japan aiding Polish resistance, plotting against each other, supplying the enemy — the Axis wasn’t a coalition, it was a cage match with a shared letterhead.

Gorgocutie’s Verdict:

This is the difference between a pantheon that works (the Olympians when they bother to show up to council) and one that doesn’t (the Titans, who couldn’t stop eating each other long enough to win a war). The Allies achieved a temporary Pax Olympica around the sacred round table. The Axis devolved into a Theomachy — gods at war with themselves.

History’s lesson: you can’t build an empire on “at least we all hate the same people.” That’s not an alliance, that’s a grudge with benefits.
