Centaur Replica

564

This sculpture was found in the mid-nineteenth century in Albano, one of the luxurious residences of the Pamphilj located in Lazio. It is a remarkable replica, perhaps from the Antonine period, 138-192 AD, derived from one of the two so-called Furietti Centaurs, known from the famous specimens of the Capitoline Museums and coming from Villa Adriana. The model was sculpted in gray-brown marble and signed by Aristeas, an artist from Aphrodisias, a city that exports sculptures. The composition refers to the Hellenistic world. The version that can be admired in the Doria Pamphilj Gallery in Rome is embellished with precious old red and black marble, with an antique green base, in addition to the excellent quality of the carving.
