Franz Bohumil Doubek (Czech, 1865–1952)Allegory of Summer (Alegorie Léta), 1905. Oil on canvas.

Summer, personified: a woman in a flowing green gown, her back to us, glancing over her shoulder, a sickle in one hand and a bundle of wheat in the other. She’s not the girlish nymph of spring — this is summer as the working season, the one where the harvest actually gets gathered. The wheat is cut, the grain is real, and the woman holding it is muscular, luminous, and utterly self-possessed.

Doubek was a Czech painter who studied in Prague and Munich and made his name with allegories, portraits, and nudes in the academic style — the kind of late-19th/early-20th-century painting that knew how to do two things perfectly: drape fabric and light skin. This one shows both skills at once. The green robe clings and flows like water, translucent where it matters, and the figure glows against the dark, atmospheric background like the sun itself is hiding behind her.

The sickle-and-wheat combo is the oldest agricultural shorthand in European art — Ceres, the Roman goddess of grain, carried exactly this kit. But where Ceres is usually a stately matron in full drapery, Doubek’s Summer is a young woman with a strong back, caught mid-glance over her shoulder, as if to say: yes, I’m the harvest, what of it? The allegory is doing double duty: the season, and the beauty of the season’s labor.

There’s a lovely tension in the pose — her face turned back toward us while her body faces the work. It’s the eternal gesture of the productive season: one eye on the fields, one eye on history. And the sickle in her hand isn’t a prop; it’s curved like a question mark, asking whether the harvest belongs to the gods or to the people who actually cut it.

Fun fact: Doubek lived to 87, through the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, two world wars, and the rise of Czechoslovakia — a man who painted timeless allegories while the century around him did everything but. His Summer still stands in her green dress, sickle in hand, outlasting every empire that ever tried to own the season.
